Rival claims to the title have been made by German emperors and kings of the House of Hohenzollern and by the head of the French noble family of Mailly. The current users of the title are Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands (Orange-Nassau), Georg Friedrich (of Hohenzollern), and Guy (of Mailly-Nesle). Traditionally, members of the Nassau family were buried in Breda; but because that city was in Spanish hands when William died, he was buried in a new crypt in the New Church, Delft. The monument on his tomb was originally very modest, but it was replaced in 1623 by a new one, made by Hendrik de Keyser and his son Pieter. Since then, most of the members of the House of Orange-Nassau, including all Dutch monarchs, have been buried in that church.

His son, the next titular prince of Orange, became sovereign prince of the Netherlands in 1814 and king in 1815, as William I. He and his successors, William II and William III, were also grand dukes of Luxembourg; and the title prince of Orange was borne by heirs apparent to the Dutch throne. With King William III the male line died out in 1890; but the Dutch queen Wilhelmina decreed in 1908 that her descendants should be styled princes and princesses of Orange-Nassau. Henry III of Nassau-Breda came to the Netherlands in 1499 as heir to his uncle, Engelbrecht II of Nassau-Breda. When Philbert, prince of Orange died in 1530, his sister's son René of Breda inherited the Princedom of Orange on condition that he used the name and coat of arms of the Châlon-Orange family. History knows him therefore as René of Châlon instead of as "René of Nassau-Breda." The 1st and 4th grand quarters show the arms of the Chalons-Arlay (the gold bend) princes of Orange (the bugle).
Titles
Blue, because of its nearness to purple, which in the northern climes tended to fade (red was the other choice), was also a popular color for those with royal aspirations. The billets could have been anything from blocks of wood to abstractions of the reenforcements holding the shield together. The fact that these were arms were very similar to those of the counts of Burgundy (Franche-Comté) did not seem to cause too much confusion. However, he was never recognized outside of Holland and areas friendly to Holland as Prince of Orange.

Justinus van Nassau was the only extramarital child of William of Orange. He was a Dutch army commander known for unsuccessfully defending Breda against the Spanish, and the depiction of his surrender on the famous picture by Diego Velázquez, The Surrender of Breda. Louis of Nassau, Lord of De Lek and Beverweerd was a younger illegitimate son of Prince Maurice and Margaretha van Mechelen. One of his sons was the famous general Henry de Nassau, Lord of Overkirk, King William III's Master of the Horse, and one of the most trusted generals of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough.
The 2nd house of Orange-Nassau (see House of Orange-Nassau family tree) were cousins on their father and mother's side of the 1st house. The last direct descendant of the original princes, René of Chalon, exercised his sovereign right and left the principality to his cousin William the Silent, who was not a descendant of the original Orange family but the heir to the principality of Orange by testament. In this way, Rene transmitted his property to his nearest relative, rather than go back several generations to transmit it to now distant cousins. The title "Prince of Orange" was created in 1163 by the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, by elevating the county of Orange to a principality, in order to bolster his support in that area in his conflict with the Papacy. The title and land passed to the French noble houses of Baux, in 1173, and of Chalons, in 1393, before arriving with Rene of Nassau in 1530. The principality then passed to a German-born nobleman from then Spanish Netherlands, Rene's cousin William (known as "the Silent"), in 1544.

Wilhelmina was the sole heir to the throne when her father passed in 1890. Therefore, her mother, Emma served as regent until Wilhelmina became of age in 1898. The Kingdom of the Netherlands was established in 1815 with King William I, from the House of Orange-Nassau, as monarch. William II then became King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg.
Stadtholder-King
These principalities were confiscated when Napoleon invaded Germany (1806) and William VI supported his Prussian relatives. He succeeded his father as prince of Orange later that year, after William V's death. The house of Orange-Nassau also had several illegitimate lines (see below) who based their arms on the arms of Nassau-Dillenburg. They also claimed on the basis of the testaments of Philip William, Maurice, and William III. Finally, they claimed on the basis that Orange was an independent state whose sovereign had the right to assign his succession according to his will.
Juliana reigned until her own abdication in 1980, which resulted in her eldest daughter Beatrix becoming queen. Then Queen (now Princess) Beatrix abdicated on 30 April 2013 in favour of her son, now King Willem-Alexander. The gallery below show the coats of arms used by members of the house of Orange-Nassau. Their growing complexity and use of crowns shows how arms are used to reflect the growing political position and royal aspirations of the family. The princes of Orange in the 16th and 17th century used the following sets of arms.
Dying in 1544, René bequeathed his titles to his young cousin, William I of Nassau-Orange. The ancestral coat of arms of the Ottonian line of the house of Nassau is shown right. Their distant cousins of the Walramian line added a red coronet to distinguish them. There is no specific documentation in the literature on the origin of the arms.
The lion was always a popular noble symbol, originating as a symbol of nobility, power, and royal aspirations in western culture going all the way back to Hercules. The lion was also heavily used as a heraldic symbol in border territories and neighbouring countries of the Holy Roman Empire and France. It was in all likelihood a way of showing independence from the Holy Roman Emperor, who used an eagle in his personal arms and the King of France, who used the famous Fleur-de-lis. The lion was so heavily used in the Netherlands for various provinces and families (see Leo Belgicus) that it became the national arms of the Dutch Republic, its successor Kingdom of the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg.
His great-grandson William the Third, King of England and Scotland and Stadtholder in the Netherlands, was buried in Westminster Abbey. The main house of Orange-Nassau also spawned several illegitimate branches. These branches contributed to the political and economic history of England and the Netherlands.

The Dutch Republic would collapse in 1795, and the last of the governors fled to England. William would go on to lead the revolt by the Dutch against the Spanish rule during the Eighty Years’ War. The Eighty Years’ War, or Dutch War of Independence, had the Seventeen Provinces consisting of modern-day Luxembourg, Belgium, Netherlands, and parts of France fighting against the reign of Philip II of Spain. The Dutch Revolt which began in 1568 is not as simple as the story of one nobleman rebelling against the King of Spain.
As sovereign prince of Orange
In 1897, Sicco Roorda van Eysinga penned a satirical pamphlet about an exhibitionist ‘King Gorilla’ who abused his power and threatened and beat his wife. As the crown prince of Orange, he was at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, where he suffered a shoulder injury. In Robert A. Heinlein's 1956 science fiction novel Double Star, the House of Orange reigns over – but does not rule over – an empire of humanity that spans the entire Solar System.
Titles
Although no longer descended from Louis-Charles, a branch of the Mailly family still claim the title today. With the 19th century emergence of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the title has been traditionally borne by the heir apparent of the Dutch monarch. Although originally only carried by men, since 1983 the title descends via absolute primogeniture, which means that the holder can be either Prince or Princess of Orange. In 1688, William embarked on a mission to depose his Catholic father-in-law from the thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland. He and his wife were crowned the King and Queen of England on April 11, 1689. The counts of Orange became independent upon the disintegration of the feudal kingdom of Arles. They were vassals of the Holy Roman emperors from the 12th century, and they early began to style themselves princes. When Philibert de Chalon, prince of Orange, died in 1530, he was succeeded by his sister Claudia’s son René of Nassau, who in 1538 succeeded his father, Henry III of Nassau-Dillenburg-Breda, not only in his German patrimony but also in scattered possessions in the Netherlands.

Frederick van Nassau, Lord of Zuylestein, an illegitimate son of Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange, gave rise to the Earls of Rochford in England. William III (Willem III) was also King of England, Scotland and Ireland, and his legacy is commemorated annually by the Protestant Orange Order. William's mother, Mary, was the daughter of King Charles I of England and therefore a princess of England as well as Princess of Orange by marriage. For the first time, visitors will be able to see them from close quarters, as we tell the story of the House of Orange-Nassau and the history of the Netherlands in six periods, using objects, images and animations.
Origins of the Nassaus
More, the monarchy became more liberal with the establishment of the constitution in 1848. The Dutch were very unhappy with the high rate of taxation the Spanish crown imposed on them. The Seventeen Provinces were also required to ask for permission from the crown for their actions. Moreover, Philip had Spanish troops stationed in the area, much to their dismay, to ensure the Dutch followed the laws.
Although William descended from no previous Prince of Orange, as René had no children or siblings, he exercised his right as sovereign prince to will Orange to his first cousin on his father's side, who actually had no Orange blood. The Principality originated as the County of Orange, a fief in the Holy Roman Empire, in the Empire's constituent Kingdom of Burgundy. It was awarded to William of Gellone (born 755), a grandson of Charles Martel and therefore a cousin of Charlemagne, around the year 800 for his services in the wars against the Moors and in the reconquest of southern France and the Spanish March. His Occitan name is Guilhem; however, as a Frankish lord, he probably knew himself by the old Germanic version of Wilhelm. William also ruled as count of Toulouse, duke of Aquitaine,[citation needed] and marquis of Septimania. The current Dutch royal dynasty, the House of Orange-Nassau, is not the only family to claim the dynastical title.
Arms
On becoming Prince of Orange, William placed the Châlon-Arlay arms in the center ("as an inescutcheon") of his father's arms. He used these arms until 1582 when he purchased the marquisate of Veere and Vlissingen. After the establishment of the current Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1815, the title was partly reconstitutionalized by legislation and granted to the eldest son of King William I of the Netherlands, Prince William, who later became William II of the Netherlands. After William's death in 1702, his heir in the Netherlands was John William Friso of Nassau-Diez, who assumed the title, King William having bequeathed it to him by testament. The other contender was the King in Prussia, who based his claim to the title on the will of Frederick Henry, William III's grandfather. Eventually, a compromise was reached by which both families were entitled to bear the title of Prince of Orange.
The blue and gold cross is the arms of Jeanne of Geneva, who married one of the Chalons princes. The inescutcheon overall is his paternal arms quartered of Nassau and Breda. William the Silent's father, William the Rich, was rich only in children. Clockwise from upper left they displayed the arms of Nassau (1st quarter), Katzenelenbogen (3rd quarter), Dietz (2nd quarter), Vianden (4th quarter). The military function of stadtholder was no longer superfluous, and with the support of the Orangists, William was restored, and he became the stadtholder. He became more powerful than his predecessors from the Eighty Years' War.[7][8] In 1677, William married his cousin Mary Stuart, the daughter of the future king James II of England.
Personal accounts, and lots of pictures and objects, give us a glimpse of each stage of their public and private lives down the centuries. In 1908, Wilhelmina decreed that all of her descendants should be styled with the title Prince or Princess of Orange-Nassau. Her daughter, Juliana succeeded her as Queen of the Netherlands in 1948 after the former’s abdication.

We just had the worst most inconsiderate service imaginable. My wife and I took our two boys (ages 2 & 5) to dinner at Coopers in Scranton. My wife got the boys kids meals of fried shrimp and French fries.

In "There's Someone Inside Your House," one of the most prominent red herrings is Makani's secret fling and the class outsider Ollie Larsson (Théodore Pellerin), who most of Makani's friends believe is the killer. Of course, Ollie is actually not the killer; instead, it's someone who was in plain sight all along. Based on the young adult horror novel of the same name, "There's Someone Inside Your House" stars Sydney Park as Makani Young, a high-school transfer student who moves from her home in Hawaii to live with her grandmother in a much more rural community. A year after the move, as Makani adjusts to her new school and makes friends, some of her fellow classmates are found brutally murdered by a killer who wears a mask identical to each victim's own face. Not that Brice and screenwriter Henry Gayden (“Shazam!”) don’t have a fine needle to thread.

It’s a crazy birth story because I swallowed my mother’s umbilical cord. So when I was born through a C-section, I was not crying and I was actually dead. So they had to smack my back and get all of the stuff out of me… There’s more to the birth story, but Halloween is the day. (Laughs.) It was the scariest day of my mom’s life, as she always likes to remind me. Maybe this is a product of the movie’s nature as an adaptation, but there’s never really a moment in “There’s Someone Inside Your House” that suggests its protagonists are real enough to be worth rooting for. They talk a lot about hiding their true selves from each other, but often don’t seem human enough to be credibly shallow.

With plenty of shocking revelations and twists, "There's Someone Inside Your House" keeps you on your toes until the very end, and the murderer's identity is probably one you won't see coming. One moment was at the table read for the first episode I did [season three, episode two, “Knighttime”]. Drew Barrymore was walking around the table and saying hi to everybody and hugging everybody. And then she hugged me and was like, “Oh my gosh, you are so sexy.” And then she grabbed me and embraced me.

Right down to the final reveal -- which is lazy, empty, and disappointing. At times, it feels like the film's trying to say something about "cancel culture," but once people who made genuine mistakes are lumped together with actual abusers and hate-mongers, the point dissolves into nothing. These components all feel perfunctory, like Brice and Gayden checking boxes off a list of what they think Gen-Z teenagers will respond to.

Makani finds herself left alone in the school building, after the rest of the school leaves for a field trip to the Sanford family corn maze, and Makani misses the bus. When she sees Ollie’s car pull up, she flees and runs into her friend Caleb in the hallway. Before she can fill him in, Caleb is stabbed with a sword by the killer. At the same time, Ollie is running into the building, yelling Makani’s name to warn her—meaning the killer is not Ollie. Based on the 2017 book by Stephanie Perkins of the same name, There’s Someone Inside Your House was adapted for the screen by Henry Gayden and directed by Patrick Brice.

With the town reeling, the next then kill solidifies the fact that the murderer is going after people with dark secrets. Specifically, secrets about the victims being purposefully awful people. At the corn maze, the killer sets fire to the maze with the football team inside, so Makani and her friends drive into the flames to help the football players escape. Darby and Alex help the players find their way out, while Ollie and Makani try to find Zach. They ultimately confront the killer, now wearing Skipper's face, who kills Skipper before revealing himself to be Zach. He explains to Makani that he killed everyone because he wanted to expose everyone's secrets in revenge for the bullying he endured for being the rich son of Skipper, whom the town disliked for making billions by selling and buying farms.
There's Someone Inside Your House is a wholly crummy affair with no teeth, no point, and no heart. There’s obvious business sense behind the cyclical resurgence of the teen slasher, age-old formula cheaply reproduced by barely-paid no-names aimed at an easily devalued and underestimated younger audience. What’s less obvious is why in the age of low-stakes streaming, it’s taken this long for them to return from the dead once again. But after the success of 2017’s Happy Death Day and 2018’s record-breaking Halloween, we’re now in the middle of a full-blooded renaissance. A staple of slasher and murder-mystery films is the red herring, which seemingly leads you toward the killer, but in actuality distracts you from the truth.
According to Makani, she was a cheerleader at her old school, and the younger girls were forced to attend a bonfire and drink until they were on the verge of blacking out. At one point, one of the other cheerleaders named Jasmine (Tally Rodin) pushed Makani drunkenly, and an equally-inebriated Makani pushed back — only Jasmine accidentally fell into the fire and was severely burned. Makani was charged and went to trial, but was later acquitted, and her parents sent her to live in Nebraska to start over. Like other thrilling slashers, "There's Someone Inside Your House" follows Sydney as she and her surviving friends try to piece together the mystery before it's too late.
From the killer's themed costume to the action set pieces to the actual reason the killer is killing, There's Someone Inside Your House is a haze of slasher malaise. It's also wildly inconsistent with its gimmick, messaging, and tone, wanting to be a Scream-style meta mystery, a Heathers-style high school satire, and a dramatic redemption story all at once. It's so algorithmically thrown together that even the titular premise/promise -- of someone being in someone's house -- doesn't even hold for more than one kill.
The death scenes are eye-openingly gory yet annoyingly rushed and entirely, maddeningly suspense-free. The awkward tonal veering between comedy and horror marks the film out as less Scream and more whimper (the mask designs are also so low-rent that we can never really tell who they are supposed to represent). Halloween has always been a special day for Sydney Park, but this year’s celebration was extra meaningful. Park was not only born on Halloween, but now, she’s a full-fledged scream queen thanks to her teen slasher film, There’s Someone Inside Your House, which Netflix released a few weeks ago as part of its Halloween programming. Produced by Shawn Levy and James Wan, Park wrapped the Patrick Brice-directed film in October 2019, but returned to set in August 2020 to reshoot a few scenes, including the reveal of the masked killer. That’s a good enough prompt for a horror movie, especially one concerned with adolescent stuff like drugs, daddy issues, and dating.
When students at Osbourne High are killed off one by one by a Malevolent Masked Man hellbent on exposing their lies, she has to protect herself and her secrets. Zach explains in his little villain monologue that his intention was to teach his father (who is also a Nazi?) a lesson. Zach stabs Ollie and explains that he’s not a sociopath, and doesn’t want to feel ashamed just because he was born to privilege. Then he also talks a bit about how everyone is wearing fake faces, hence the whole mask thing. Oh, and also, he is going to frame Makani for everything, which is why he handed her the sword earlier.
It meant that Netflix was on board and wanted us to put our best foot forward. They flew us out to Vancouver again, which was amazing. It was so weird, too, because we had to quarantine for two weeks, but the rewrites made sense. He took Netflix’s notes and was like, “Okay, here’s what we’re going to do. This is so much better.” And I think it worked out.
Part of the killer's modus operandi is revealing their victim's secrets before they're killed. For example, one of the victims is a violent homophobe, and another is a secret white supremacist. With this in mind, it makes sense for viewers to assume the perpetrator is seeking revenge from people who'd hurt them in the past. As with nearly every other teen-centric slasher this side of “Scream,” “There’s Someone Inside Your House” takes great pains to avoid the unpardonable sin of sincerity — at least at first. The film’s tongue is planted firmly in its cheek, its characters occasionally act as though they know they’re in a scary movie, and you can’t tell whether you’re supposed to cringe or cheer when yet another teen is offed. ” the doomed quarterback asks moments before his demise, “because I can Venmo you, like, right now.” It’s a funny line, as are many others here, but in trying to be humorous and horrifying at the same time the film is sometimes neither.

New slasher flick There's Someone Inside Your House is an unfocused, unsatisfying teenage body dropper that feels like a patchwork poser compared to other, better horror mysteries. It dresses itself up in a dozen gimmicks to make it seem like more than a copycat of superior projects, but just about everything going on here is underwhelming to a frustrating degree. First of all, thank you so much for saying that. I absolutely adored Santa Clarita Diet before I got the audition, and then when I did, I was like, “Holy fuck, this is amazing.” And everybody was so cool.

I shrug in the general direction of the ending, but the rest of it generates enough narrative traction to maintain our interest. And for those of you who are here for the kills, well, the kills are damn killy, and even if they’re not innovative — knife meets body; repeat — for people who want kills, the movie is better than one without kills at all. Admittedly, There's Someone Inside Your House is a good title for a film looking to play around with tropes and get a bit winky and clever with set pieces.

So I was around all of these weird scans, and I was like, “Guys, I’m feeling like shit.” So they had a banana and a coffee mug for me. We’re going to get your face.” So everybody got 3D scanned, and then our special effects and makeup departments ended up making multiples of each character’s mask.

And the streaming service’s latest, There’s Someone Inside Your House, is similarly indebted to films like Black Christmas, Haze, and I Know What You Did Last Summer, which it explicitly references. There is one creepy conceit in There’s Someone Inside Your House, but that one genuinely spooky detail can’t counter the overall familiarity. There’s Someone Inside Your House is intermittently effective, but ultimately unremarkable, and it feels like a product of its time in disappointing ways.
(Eh — probably a stretch.) Or maybe it’s just funny to watch a hooded menace gut a kid outed as the anonymous host of a grotesque white supremacist podcast. The Walking Dead's Sydney Park stars as Makani, a girl who's recently moved to town, escaping a recent, tragic event who, like everyone else, becomes the target of this masked assailant because... Again though, Makani, and her band of outcast friends, are apparently just as vulnerable as the killer's first two victims, who are a nasty prejudiced people. And all the while the film plays the Red Herring shell game to the point where the killer really can't be anyone except the one person that doesn't make any damn sense. Number one, she had a summer fling with the town’s resident bad boy weirdo, Ollie (Théodore Pellerin), whom everyone suspects to be the killer.
THERE’S SOMEONE INSIDE YOUR HOUSE: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?
But those slasher sequences lack the propulsive energy and over-the-top grotesquerie needed to jolt There’s Someone Inside Your House to life. There are bursts of blood from sliced-open tendons, torsos, and throats, but the artificiality of that candy-red gore extends to the whole contrived movie. The graduating class at Osborne High is being targeted by a masked assailant, intent on exposing the darkest secret of each victim, and only a group of misfit outsiders can stop the killings... Alex is convinced the killer is Ollie (Theodore Pellerin), the outcast of outcasts who gives her bad vibes — “Yeah, you, all-in-black school-shooter style icon,” she snipes — but nobody knows that he and Makani have been secretly doing a lot more than just kissing.
